Una de las mayores conquistas de la persona humana en su proceso de individuación es la libertad de espíritu. La libertad de espíritu es la capacidad de ser doblemente libre: libre de las imposiciones, reglas, normas y protocolos que fueron inventados por la sociedad y las instituciones para uniformar comportamientos y moldear personalidades según tales determinaciones. Y fundamentalmente significa ser libre para ser auténtico, pensar con su propia cabeza y actuar de acuerdo a su norma interior, madurada a lo largo de toda una vida, en resistencia y en tensión con esas imposiciones.

Y esta es una lucha titánica, pues todos nacemos dentro de ciertas determinaciones que son independientes de nuestra voluntad, sea en la familia, la escuela, el círculo de amigos, la religión y la cultura que dan forma a nuestros hábitos. Todos estos elementos actúan como superyós que pueden ser limitantes y en algunos casos hasta castradores. Lógicamente, estos límites tienen una función reguladora importante. El río llega al mar porque tiene márgenes y límites, pero estos también pueden represar las aguas que deberían fluir; entonces se desbordan por los lados y se convierten en charcos.

Las actitudes y los comportamientos sorprendentes del actual obispo de Roma, como a él le gusta presentarse, comúnmente llamado Papa, Francisco, nos evocan esta categoría tan determinante de la libertad de espíritu.

Normalmente, el cardenal nombrado papa asume enseguida el estilo clásico, hierático y sacral de los papas, ya sea en la vestimenta, en los gestos, en los símbolos del poder sagrado y supremo, y en el lenguaje. Francisco, dotado de una gran libertad de espíritu, ha hecho lo contrario: ha adaptado la figura del Papa a su estilo personal, a sus hábitos y a sus convicciones. Todo el mundo conoce las rupturas que ha introducido sin mayor ceremonia. Se aligeró de todos los símbolos de poder, especialmente la cruz de oro y piedras preciosas y la pequeña capa (mozzetta) que llevaban los otros, llena de brocados y joyas, otrora símbolo de los emperadores romanos paganos. Sonriente dijo al secretario que quería ponerla sobre sus hombros: “guárdela porque el carnaval ha terminado”. Se viste con la mayor sobriedad, de blanco, con sus zapatos negros habituales y, por debajo, con sus pantalones, negros también. Prescinde de todos los servicios asignados al Pastor supremo de la Iglesia, empezando por el palacio papal que ha reemplazado por una residencia eclesiástica, y come con los demás. Piensa antes en el pobre Pedro, que era un rudo pescador, o en Jesús, que según el poeta Fernando Pessoa, «no sabía nada de contabilidad ni consta que tuviera biblioteca» pues era un «factótum» y un simple campesino mediterráneo. Se siente sucesor del primero y representante del segundo. No quiere que le llamen Su Santidad, porque se siente «hermano entre hermanos», ni quiere presidir la Iglesia en el rigor del derecho canónico, sino en cálida caridad.

En su viaje a Brasil ha demostrado sin ninguna espectacularización su libertad de espíritu: desea como transporte un vehículo popular, un jeep cubierto para poder moverse en medio de la multitud, se detiene para abrazar a los niños, para beber un poco de mate, para intercambiar su solideo papal blanco por otro medio chafado que le ofrece un fiel. Durante la ceremonia oficial de bienvenida del gobierno, que sigue un estricto protocolo, después del discurso se dirige a la presidenta Dilma Rousseff y la besa, para consternación del maestro de ceremonias. Y hay muchos otros ejemplos.

Esta libertad de espíritu trae un brillo innegable hecho de ternura y vigor, las características personales de san Francisco de Asís. Se trata de una persona de gran entereza. Estas actitudes personales serenas y fuertes muestran un hombre de gran ternura que ha realizado una síntesis personal significativa entre su ser interior y su yo consciente. Es lo que se espera de un líder, sobre todo religioso. Evoca al mismo tiempo ligereza y seguridad.

Esta libertad de espíritu se ve reforzada por el espléndido rescate que hace de la razón cordial. La mayoría de los cristianos están cansados de doctrinas y se muestran escépticos ante las campañas contra los enemigos reales o imaginarios de la fe. Todos estamos impregnados hasta la médula de la razón intelectual, funcional, analítica y eficientista. Ahora viene alguien que en todo momento habla desde el corazón, como lo hizo en su discurso a la comunidad (favela) de la Varginha o en la isla de Lampedusa. En el corazón es donde mora el sentimiento profundo por los demás y por Dios. Sin el corazón las doctrinas son frías y no suscitan ninguna pasión. Ante los supervivientes venidos de África, confiesa: «Somos una sociedad que ha olvidado la experiencia de llorar, de ‘sufrir con’: la globalización de la indiferencia nos ha quitado la capacidad de llorar». Sentencia con sabiduría: «La medida de la grandeza de una sociedad viene dada por la forma como trata a los más necesitados».

Según esta medida, la sociedad global es un pigmeo, anémica y cruel.

La razón cordial es más eficaz en la presentación del sueño de Jesús que cualquier doctrina erudita y convierte a su principal heraldo, Francisco de Roma, en una figura fascinante que llega al corazón de los cristianos y de otras personas.
