Juan Pablo II ha sido uno de los hombres más carismáticos y populares de los últimos tiempos. Su ministerio al frente de la Iglesia católica ha sido uno de los más largos de la historia de la misma Iglesia. Tal vez a eso sea debida su fuerte incidencia en la vida eclesial y social.
Fue un hombre coherente consigo mismo y sus principios religiosos. Un auténtico creyente. Su sentido de la justicia le llevó a la defensa de los derechos humanos y de la justicia social por donde quiera que peregrinó.
Sus encíclicas “Centesimus Annus”, “Laborem Exercens”, “Solicitudo Rei Socialis”… han marcado línea en la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia en defensa de la justicia y del bien común.
Denunció en diversas ocasiones la carrera armamentista y la política materialista del capitalismo neoliberal, calificándolo de “salvaje”. Tomó una actitud valiente frente a la paz del mundo. Se opuso firmemente a la invasión de Irak por parte de Estados Unidos y sus aliados (Blair y Aznar), considerándola como una inmoralidad histórica.
Realizó 104 viajes a 29 países diferentes. Es llamado el “Papa viajero”. Fue un gran comunicador. Tuvo un gran don de gentes.
Tuvo el  coraje de visitar en la cárcel a Alí Agca, quien intentara asesinarle. Le dio un abrazo y le perdonó.
Vivió su enfermedad y ancianidad sin miedo al dolor ni a la muerte, asociándose a la pasión de Cristo.
Sin embargo, durante su pontificado la Iglesia católica ha sufrido una cuantiosa sangría de fieles debido a la corrupción que se generó dentro de la Curia romana y altos dignatarios de la Iglesia. Multitud de católicos se han pasado a las sectas protestantes, sobre todo en América Latina. Y grandes contingentes de hombres y mujeres, especialmente jóvenes, que fueron católicos han dejado de creer en la Iglesia. El islán ha crecido notablemente durante los  44 años de pontificado de Juan Pablo II y Benedicto XVI, siendo ya la religión más numerosa del planeta.
Los valores positivos que, sin duda tenía  Juan Pablo II, han quedado ensombrecidos porque:
*Encubrió a innumerables clérigos pederastas. Muchos obispos, sacerdotes, religiosos, religiosas y laicos enviaron cartas al Papa Juan Pablo II o le entregaron personalmente información de casos de pederastia, y él no tomó cartas en el asunto, antes bien  los protegió, como es el caso de Marcial Maciel, fundador de los Legionarios de Cristo y amigo personal suyo, para protegerlos de la justicia.
*Configuró  una Curia Romana de monseñores corruptos, avarientos de poder y de control de las finanzas del  IOR (Banco Vaticano), algunos de los cuales estaban implicados en la mafia con Michele Sindona y Roberto Calvi. Monseñor Marcinkus, director del Banco Vaticano mantenía relaciones con la masonería y la CIA. Fue imputado por la justicia italiana. Juan Pablo II permaneció pasivo frente a los escándalos financieros del Banco Vaticano.
*Guardó silencio ante la misteriosa muerte de Juan Pablo I, su antecesor, ocurrida en 1978,  quién había determinado acabar con los negocios vaticanos haciendo frente a la mafia, y aportar a la construcción de una Iglesia más evangélica.
*Ante la muerte violenta en Londres del banquero católico Roberto Calvi (junio 1982), que durante años había negociado en nombre de las finanzas del Vaticano,  no pronunció una sola palabra de lamentación ni de humana piedad. Guardó absoluto silencio.
*Cuando el 4 de mayo de 1998 aparecieron asesinados en el Vaticano el coronel de la Guardia Suiza Alois Estermann, su esposa Gladys Meza, y el cabo Cédric Tornay, el Papa se limitó a una lamentación y aceptó que la Curia romana impidiera una investigación que averiguase la verdad sobre el tripe crimen. Las autopsias se realizaron dentro del vaticano y quedaron como un asunto secreto.
*Protegió incondicionalmene al Cardenal Cody, de Chicago, hombre de muy mala reputación en los Estados Unidos por actos de corrupción. Éste ofrecía anualmente  al Papa  50.000 dólares.
*Combatió la libertad de pensamiento en la Iglesia, silenciando y condenando a casi 400 teólogos y teólogas porque disentían sobre algunas normativas que él dictaba. Ejerció un pontificado marcadamente autoritario e inquisitorial.
*Apoyó con  dinero del IOR (Banco Vaticano) al sindicato “Solidaridad” de Polonia en su lucha política contra el gobierno de su país, mientras condenaba a los sacerdotes y  religiosos que colaboraban con las organizaciones sociales y populares en América Latina.
*Llamó públicamente la atención al monje y poeta nicaragüense Ernesto Cardenal porque, provisionalmente, ocupaba el cargo de ministro de Cultura. En su visita a Nicaragua no hizo caso del clamor popular pidiéndole al Papa que condenara la guerra de la “Contra”, que tantas muertes y destrucción estaba ocasionando.
*En sus visitas a Polonia, las homilías las transformó en mítines políticos contra el régimen prosoviético. Cuando asesinaron al sacerdote Jerzy Popieluzko, militante del sindicato polaco Solidaridad, lo calificó de “héroe” y “mártir”.
*Atacó, sin conocerla, la teología de la liberación, llevando a cabo un proceso sistemático de desarticulación de la Iglesia que camina al lado de los empobrecidos de la tierra.
*Realizó nombramientos de obispos de discutida conducta y destituyó a otros obispos coherentes y sencillos, que estaban acompañando a sus pueblos, que denunciaban las violaciones a los derechos humanos y defendían a la gente pobre.
*En las diócesis donde hubo un obispo comprometido con los pobres, o con los indígenas, al jubilarse éste o morir, nombró a otro de línea totalmente opuesta, vg. San Salvador, Recife, Sao Paulo, Cuernavaca, Tehuantepec,  Quiché…
*Cerró Institutos de Teología y Seminarios que preparaban sacerdotes al estilo de Jesús, servidores y defensores de los pobres, comprometidos con la justicia, (ITES, SERESURE…).
*Favoreció a los movimientos ultraconservadores como el Opus Dei y los “Kikos”, mientras fustigó a las comunidades cristianas de base y a la Teología de la Liberación.
*Nombró como jefe de la Comisión para la Doctrina de la Fe (antigua Inquisición) al cardenal conservador Joseph Ratzinger, que como un inquisidor fue vigilando paso por paso el pensamiento de cada teólogo. No admitió el pluralismo ni el diálogo intereclesial.
*Ignoró los planteamientos pastorales del Concilio Vaticano II, que convocara el “Papa Bueno” Juan XXIII.
*Sus viajes por el mundo fueron manifestaciones organizadas mediante acuerdos tecnológicos y políticos con la ayuda de millones de dólares (muchos de ellos programados por el Opus Dei), en vez de ser expresiones espontáneas de fe del pueblo católico. Estableció alianzas estratégicas con el presidente norteamericano Ronald Reagan.
*Fue cruel con Monseñor Oscar Romero, arzobispo de El Salvador, cuando éste llegó al Vaticano con un dosier de documentos sobre las masacres que el ejército de este país centroamericano realizaba contra humildes campesinos, secuestros, torturas y asesinatos de sacerdotes y religiosas. Juan Pablo le dijo: “Si usted se llevara bien con las autoridades esto se hubiera evitado”.
*Impulsó prepotentemente normativas rígidas en materia de moral sexual, condenando métodos artificiales de regulación de natalidad. No escuchó  las voces críticas que le llegaron desde las bases de la Iglesia, sobre todo de África y América Latina.
*Guardó silencio frente a las dictaduras militares latinoamericanas que costó la vida a innumerables cristianos (catequistas, sacerdotes, religiosos y religiosas y obispos),  y en su visita a Chile bendijo a Pinochet, quien asesinó a más de 4.000 personas.
