En los años más difíciles de los países centroamericanos, dominados por dictaduras crueles y animados por organizaciones populares y comunidades eclesiales de base en una lucha por la justicia y la paz, solíamos escuchar una emisora que por su compromiso con las causas de los empobrecidos fue acallada. Era la Radio Noticias del Continente, que, desde Costa Rica nos participaba lo que sucedía en Nicaragua y en El Salvador… así mismo amplificaba las homilías de Mons. Romero, cada domingo en la Catedral de San Salvador… sobre todo fue la única opción hasta dentro de El Salvador cuando destruyeron la Emisora del Obispado…

Cada domingo, era nuestro deber escuchar Radio Noticias del Continente, a las 10h00 transmitía las homilías de Mons. Romero. No podíamos decir que era una transmisión nítida, salía en onda corta y había mucho ruido… Muchas veces teníamos que pegar la oreja al transmisor para escuchar. Pero, era un deber cumplido con alegría porque las enseñanzas que recibíamos de Mons. Romero eran irreemplazables. Cuando los gobiernos de derecha que se sucedían en El Salvador ofreciendo reformas, en boca de Mons. Romero “teñidas de tanta sangre”, fueron silenciando a periodistas y medios alternativos, Mons. Romero fue la única voz que podía comunicar noticias sobre los muertos que caían a diario en una represión sangrienta que enlutaba hogares campesinos y populares. Así, escuchar a Mons. Romero cada domingo era una fuente invalorable para entender lo que sucedía en el Pulgarcito de América, pero, además para descubrir ese Evangelio “hecho carne” en esa realidad lacerante.

Muchas veces con Mons. Proaño escuchábamos las homilías… y ese lunes, 24 de marzo, ya después del trabajo, como si un anuncio nos hiciera el corazón, buscamos noticias a las seis de la tarde… y escuchamos que las amenazas de las que había hablado Mons. Romero se habían cumplido después de la homilía dominical en la que conminó a los soldados “hermanos sois de la misma sangre… en nombre de Dios y en nombre de este sufrido pueblo cuyos lamentos suben hasta el cielo, en nombre de Dios cese la represión”…

Mons. Proaño había recibido en la Iglesia de Riobamba a sacerdotes y seminaristas, a religiosas y misioneras de El Salvador… Sacerdotes que buscaban una praxis cristiana de acuerdo con el Concilio Vaticano II, con Medellín y con Puebla… Así llegó Rutilio Grande a insertarse en el Equipo Misionero Itinerante primero y luego en un equipo pastoral… Rutilio Grande, un jesuita a carta cabal, amigo personal de Mons. Romero, será quien con su martirio mueva el corazón del pastor para que llegue a comprender que vivir el Evangelio en tiempos de gobiernos represivos es ponerse del lado de los empobrecidos hasta el punto de dar la vida. Este martirio lo conducirá a Mons. Romero a leer el Evangelio con otros ojos, con los ojos llenos de lágrimas de los empobrecidos que ahora sepultaban cada día a sus hijos, hermanos, padres, madres, parientes víctimas de un sistema explotador, dominante.

Allí, en el MIAU (Movimiento Internacional de Acción Urgente), una sala en la Casa de Santa Cruz, de la Iglesia de Riobamba, donde nos reuníamos para celebrar la Eucaristía, para leer la prensa, para compartir la vida… Allí departimos con jóvenes misioneras salvadoreñas, entre ellas Silvia Arriola, que en su calidad de enfermera se alistó para atender a los “perseguidos” y ofrendó su vida de modo martirial.

Todos estos rostros vuelven a mi mente en esta tarde… Fueron años de mucho aprendizaje… Nicaragua y El Salvador nos enseñaron a leer el Evangelio en contexto de guerra de liberación.

Acá Mons. Proaño vivía un compromiso permanente con los indígenas del Chimborazo y de todo el Ecuador. Él devolvía la voz a los silenciados de siglos para que recuperen su dignidad humana. Allá Mons. Romero se hizo voz de los sin voz… Acá Mons. Proaño levantaba a los indígenas para que luchen por sus derechos. Allá Mons. Romero apoyaba el levantamiento de todo un pueblo contra la opresión… Acá Mons. Proaño era víctima de insultos y calumnias: Obispo Rojo, cura comunista, Obispo de los Indios. Allá Mons. Romero sufría amenazas de muerte conminándole a callarse… Acá Mons. Proaño hacía de sus homilías espacios de conscientización en diálogo con el pueblo de Dios. Allá Mons. Romero ponía la cátedra al servicio de la vida de los perseguidos. Acá Mons. Proaño educaba al pueblo a través de sus programas radiales, uno de los cuales desembocó en la creación del Frente de Solidaridad de Chimborazo cuyo accionar le inspiró el poema Solidaridad “sentir como algo propio el sufrimiento/ del hermano de aquí y del de allá…”. Allá Mons. Romero ponía su voz para informar por la radio los sufrimientos de su pueblo. Desde acá Mons. Proaño se hizo abrazo solidario para el pueblo salvadoreño en el asesinato de Mons. Romero y vivió junto al pueblo la represión del poder en la segunda Misa inconclusa porque acudió presuroso para estar presente en el sepelio de su hermano mártir. Desde el cielo Mons. Romero acogía a Mons. Proaño el día en que Dios lo llamó a formar parte de su Reino.

Mons. Romero habría firmado como lo hicieron un puñado de Obispos, Padres Conciliares, entre ellos Mons. Proaño, el Pacto de las Catacumbas de Santa Domitila. Pacto propuesto por Dom Helder Camara, cuya causa ha sido introducida también hace poco. En ese pacto se comprometían a vivir y a morir al servicio del pueblo, con una solidaridad a toda prueba, en la vivienda, en el vestido, en la renuncia a lujos y joyas, en el transporte, en todo… hasta dar la vida por sus hermanos, como escribió Mons. Proaño en el poema ya citado: “Entregar por amor hasta la vida,/ es la prueba mayor de la amistad/, es vivir y morir con Jesucristo/ la solidaridad”…

Ahora que veo tan próxima la llegada oficial a los altares, lo que supone un reconocimiento universal de que su vida sirve de modelo de seguimiento a Jesucristo, creo que se inicia un nuevo momento en la Iglesia Católica: el retorno a las fuentes del Evangelio, porque el Santo es aquel que se ha esmerado en seguir a Jesucristo, con coherencia, con renunciamientos, con alegría, con humildad, sin dejarse perturbar por nada ni por nadie.

Señor Jesús, Señor de la Vida y de la Historia, te agradezco por la Iglesia… tiene temporadas de invierno a las que le sigue la primavera y así quienes en el invierno oscuro y frío son plantados como un árbol que resiste a la nieve y al hielo… se los ve rebrotar en primavera con sus túnicas blancas como nadie las puede lavar, con sus frutos maduros para continuar alimentando al pueblo de Dios.

Señor Jesús, Señor de la Vida y de la Historia, te agradezco por el pueblo, por tu pueblo que sabe guardar la semilla para sembrarla en el momento oportuno.

Danos la claridad de tu Evangelio para vivir el compromiso cristiano en un momento nuevo de la historia latinoamericana, cuando hay vientos de integración en beneficio de los pobres, cuando hay gobiernos que están comprometidos con la vigencia de los derechos humanos, cuando los estados pequeños que antes vivían sometidos a los dictados imperialistas ahora se plantan con dignidad y soberanía.

Danos la valentía de seguir los pasos de nuestros hermanos obispos, pastores y profetas, mártires de tu Palabra para seguir dando la vida en la entrega servicial y cotidiana.
